John Lawrence "Larry" Avery
June 28, 1948 - January 22, 2025
In Larry’s own words… John Lawrence “Larry” Avery passed away peacefully on Wednesday, January 22, 2025, in his 77th year at Kings County Hospital, Montague, Prince Edward Island. Larry was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, but became “an adopted Islander” in 1988. Predeceased by parents Paul Domine and Edith Elizabeth “Betty” Avery (Leahy) and loving brother to his only sister Marilyn Claire Avery of Vancouver, British Columbia. Survived by the love of his life, wife Eleanor Marie Avery (nee Campbell). Caring stepfather to Jennifer Harkness (Chris), Julie McCloskey (Jody), Beth McCloskey Bruce (Curtis) and Brady McCloskey (Josh). A loving “Grampie” to Kayla Jade Elizabeth, Kacie Molly Marie, Claire Eleanora, Harrison Charles, Beau Lawrence James, Mason Brady, Isaac Bradley, Ian Alexander, Michael Alexander, John Liam, Alexandra “Alea” Nevaeh. Larry enjoyed a diverse (some may say unbelievable) working career and was an avid outdoorsman. He cherished good friendships, nature in general, history, gardening and many, many hobbies throughout his lifetime. He left his time on earth with “no regrets whatsoever.” A gift plaque from his sister-in-law (Helen MacKenzie) sums up his life in these simple words: “Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well-preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out and proclaiming, “Wow, what a ride!!!” As per Larry’s wishes, a private Celebration of Life gathering will be held at a later date in PEI: no formal visitation or service. Donations can be made to The Souris and Area Branch of the PEI Wildlife Federation (SAB) if desired.

Gerry was the happiest and proudest Pépère/Poppa to his grandchildren Sarah (Tyler), Samantha, Brittany (Terenzo), Emma (Dominick), Ben (Brianna), and Ellen; and Grand-Pépère to Kilian and Alora. He will also be missed by his best fur friend Lily. Gerry grew up in Larchwood Ontario and raised his family close by in the small community of Dowling. Although he loved Northern Ontario, he enjoyed his wonderful summers spent at East Point PEI. After a 30-year career, he retired from INCO and he and Betty made the move to PEI. In retirement he enjoyed working part-time for a few years at Canadian Tire and Walmart where he truly loved the social part of getting to talk and help everyone he met. Always a gentleman, he truly loved to talk to anyone & everyone. His love for his family was always evident. He lived to support his children and particularly his grandchildren. He enjoyed doing home renovations and painting or as Suzanne called them doing ‘Gerry Jobs’. In recent years, he could also be found at the rink or the soccer field cheering from the sidelines. His never ending I love you’s will never be forgotten. He had a strong faith, a tremendous sense of humor, and loved dinners & get togethers with family, friends and food…and maybe a rum and coke too! With this in mind, we will celebrate his life with a barbecue this summer that will include lots of love, laughs and good food & drinks! The family would like to extend their thanks to Dr. Randy MacKinnon and the Charlottetown Home Care staff. Also, special gratitude to the exceptional physicians and staff of Unit 3 who cared for Gerry during his long stay at the QEH (there are too many people to mention, but his family will be forever grateful). And finally, to the Palliative Care facility physicians and staff who went above and beyond in Gerry’s final days. By Gerry’s personal request, there will be no public visitation. A funeral mass will be held at the St. Columba Roman Catholic Church, Fairfield on Saturday, December 28, 2024, at 2:00pm.
